Day Four - Didn't Make it to Victorville.....

Wow how plans can change in a hurry.  We were up early and on the road so that we could get a jump on the 6hrs+ of driving we had planned for today.

After just one and a half hours we were crossing Fresno (pop 500k) at 75mph and massive RV sales signs could be seen from a mile away.  It was one of the multiple sites of the largest dealer in California.

We had to take a look.  We started with Jonathon to look at trailers, then switched to Zak to look at diesel pusher motorhomes.  And "Wow" we found one we really liked.  However we did not like the price compared to our research of units in Texas and Arizona.  Zak said not to worry, make an offer and see where that takes us.  We agreed.

That put us back in the hands of Jonathon.  I asked Kaye (as she has been doing the database tracking of the ones we have looked into) and she felt the right number was close to half what the sticker price said.  Johnathon did not bat an eye but said he would have to formally write up the offer and present it.  We questioned what that meant and the response was a round about statement that "if" the offer was accepted then we would be bound to buy the unit, no backing out. A big warning sign was posted on the wall that California does not have a 'cooling off' protection period.

We said we did not like that business practice and thanked him for his time.  Next came the real boss who just wanted to explain the 'why' behind the procedure.  We played the 'Canadian' card and said that it just came across as seedy and shady.  He said he understood but tried to assure us that it was just a standard practice to fend off tire kickers etc.  When we still said "Thank you and goodbye"; he offered the unit at another 20k less that what would have been our offer if we were willing to say "Yes" immediately !  We still said "No Thanks", but we took his card!  Final words were; "Please, before you spend any money call us and let us make an offer".  Like I said yesterday:  America is: 'For Sale'.

So after taking over two hours out of our travel time we were headed back to the highway. However, we had to drive past another dealer that carried the brand of diesel pushers that we have liked the best, so we had to pull in.  The end of this story will have to wait for after the Easter weekend and the finish of the Masters. Night, night.
