We did some research via the Internet on RV parks around 4-6 hours from Fresno and found one called Shady Lane in Barstow, CA that had great reviews. I called and made a reservation. After the phone call ended, I told Kaye that we were in for a treat.
We did not sleep well our 'last' night in a hotel. Too anxious. As such it was up at 0600, sorting and re-packing for a couple of hours and then on the road by 0830, including hot breakfast. Best thing we could have done. We hit Walmart first, Home Depot next and then Costco just as they were opening.
We are now official campers. We have a fridge full of food, zero gravity lounge chairs, new plastic lawn chairs, a beautiful Webber table top BBQ, doggie chain holder and lots of little extras to make life comfortable.
The news said that the storms were coming on hard and heavy wind and rain was expected. Time to get out of Dodge. The drive to Barstow was boring. Interstate I40, lots of traffic, nothing to see except the start of desert and the ass end of tractor trailers.
Our little gem of a RV park did not disappoint us as our very first night of camping. It had maybe 30 sites, totally rustic but clean, tidy and very well kept. The two old boys looking after it made us feel like teenagers.
Ron (hunchback) loved to talk and ensured that everyone was parked straight. His younger brother Jim looked after the satellite TV set-up. He looked just like a taller, older, Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, well at least the glasses he wore did. He spent over an hour in our trailer telling us stories while he set up the satellite receiver.
We spoke of the weather that was coming. Jim said it doesn't rain in April, but admitted it did look threatening. We explained that it was my fault and that he should batten down the hatches.
I had a chance to take pictures of the storm approaching. I will post these as a dedicated album on FB for those that like those kind of pictures.
We took Kyle for a long walk while the storm approached. Some very interesting sights for such a small town...
There is a small bird on the top of this pole singing out a warning of the storm. Kyle was going nuts and could not even see the little fella.
How would you like to live on this street?
This is just Classy ! There were ten that looked like this....for every one....that looked like the next picture.
However, this place had some humour to it. Check out the huge hammock and the cute parking sign.
The rains came, the wind came, and it lasted all night. Our pull through turned into a lake.
You can see the run off marks in the desert sand and how quickly the water just disappeared as the earth dried. The winds came up quickly in the morning so we decided to stay another day and wait it out vice risk the driving.
The people who pulled in beside us tonight are from Oregon. They were stuck in traffic on the I40W due to a tractor trailer that was blown over on the highway. Good decision to stay !
You won't believe this...Remember Thunderdome?
Right at the end of the road from Shady Lane we spotted these. It took us a moment to remember where we had seen them but then it all came back,.
We asked Jim if they were the originals or replicas. He explained that the two fellas (now deceased) who owned the local business made all the props for Thunderdome, Mad Max and many other movies. The props have been used in local parades and many other B movies.
Who would have thought that we could have taken a two mile excursion off a major route and found the original location of these classic props ! We enjoyed having a day of rest to play with the trailer. All is good and we are looking forward heading for Yuma tomorrow....weather permitting...
